Understanding the UK education system

UK degrees are shorter and more specialised than in many countries. From the first year you study your chosen subject in depth. Grading uses classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2) for bachelor's and Distinction/Merit/Pass for master's.

Eligibility

Admission requirements for UK

UK universities can assess English themselves for degree-level study, so many accept IELTS Academic, PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo for both admission and the visa. Some may waive the test for strong Class 12 English marks.

Undergraduate (bachelor's)

  • Class 12 with 65–90% depending on university and course
  • English: IELTS 6.0–7.0 or equivalent (some accept CBSE/ICSE English scores)
  • UCAS application with one personal statement
  • One academic reference
  • Foundation year for students who don't meet direct-entry requirements

Postgraduate (master's / MBA)

  • Bachelor's degree: typically 55–75% depending on university tier
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) is common

Student visa

UK Student Visa: process and documents

You apply after your university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). The application is online, followed by biometrics at a visa application centre. You need to show tuition fees (minus anything already paid) and living costs held for 28 consecutive days.

Step-by-step visa process

    Accept your offer and pay the deposit

    Meet conditions, accept the unconditional offer and pay any required deposit.

  2. 02

    Receive your CAS

    The university issues your CAS once documents and deposit are verified.

  3. 03

    Arrange funds

    Keep the required amount for 28 days, or get an education loan sanction letter.

  4. 04

    Apply online and pay the IHS

    Complete the application, pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.

  5. 05

    Biometrics appointment

    Visit the visa centre to give fingerprints, a photo and submit documents.

  6. 06

    Decision and travel

    Most decisions arrive within about 3 weeks; collect your BRP or use your eVisa account.

Work rights

Working in UK during and after your studies

While you study

Up to 20 hours per week during term time for degree-level study, and full-time during official vacations. Work placements that are part of the course are allowed.

After graduation

The Graduate Route lets you stay and work for 2 years after a bachelor's or master's (3 years after a PhD) without a sponsor. The UK government has announced this will reduce to 18 months for applications made from January 2027.

  • You can switch to a Skilled Worker visa when an employer sponsors you.
  • Self-employment and freelancing are not allowed on a Student visa.
