Work rights

Working in USA during and after your studies

While you study

On-campus jobs up to 20 hours a week while classes are in session and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work related to your program is possible through CPT (Curricular Practical Training) when it is part of the curriculum.

After graduation

OPT (Optional Practical Training) gives 12 months of work authorisation after graduation. Graduates of STEM-designated programs can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — up to 36 months in total. Many employers then sponsor an H-1B or other work visa.

  • Check that your program has a STEM CIP code if you want the extension.
  • Unemployment limits apply on OPT (90 days, plus 60 more on STEM OPT).
  • H-1B rules and fees changed in 2025; the rules for students changing status inside the US differ from those for applicants abroad — check current USCIS guidance.

FAQs

Study in USA: frequently asked questions

Yes, for most STEM, business and research profiles it remains the strongest destination for career outcomes, especially with up to 3 years of STEM OPT. The key is choosing programs with good placement records and planning finances realistically.

Yes. Many US universities now accept 3-year Indian degrees for master's programs, especially from NAAC A/A+ accredited colleges. Others require 16 years of education, so you may need a one-year PG diploma or a bridge course. We check this program by program.

No. A large number of universities have made GRE optional or waived it. However, a good GRE score (especially Quant 160+) still helps for competitive programs, scholarships and assistantships.

Total cost including tuition and living expenses typically ranges from about ₹35 lakh at affordable public universities to ₹80 lakh or more at private universities in expensive cities, before scholarships or assistantships.

You need liquid funds covering at least the first year's cost shown on your I-20 (tuition + living). Proof can be a mix of savings, fixed deposits, an education loan sanction letter and scholarships, plus evidence of funds for the remaining years.

Yes. Most US universities accept TOEFL and many accept Duolingo or PTE. Some waive English tests for students with English-medium education, but the visa officer may still expect strong spoken English at the interview.

Common questions cover why you chose the university and course, your academic background, who is funding your education, your sponsor's income, and what you plan to do after graduation. Answers should be honest, specific and consistent with your documents.

CPT is work authorisation during your program, linked to your curriculum (like an internship). OPT is mainly used after graduation — 12 months, plus a 24-month extension for STEM degrees.

Fall offers the most programs, scholarships and assistantships. Spring is a good option if your scores or documents are not ready for Fall, and visa slots are often easier to get.

Yes, your spouse and children can accompany you on F-2 visas if you show additional funds. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US, but can study part-time.

Popular choices include Boston, the Bay Area, Seattle, New York, Dallas, Austin, Chicago and Atlanta. Texas, Arizona and the Midwest often give a better cost-to-salary balance.

We handle profile evaluation, university shortlisting, SOP/LOR guidance, applications, I-20 coordination, education loan and proof-of-funds planning, F-1 mock interviews and pre-departure support.
